Astronomy News
Astronomy is as vast as the universe it seeks to study. It’s due to the fact that astronomy is all about the universe. So it’s no surprise that astronomy news is so popular. Let’s look at some of the more interesting tidbits.
The magazine “Astronomy” is a great source of astronomy news. One of the stories it covered was NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft. Just as weathermen examine fronts and the interaction of hot air with cold air and dry air with wet air, IBEX is interested in such fronts and their interaction in outer space. Specifically it’s the interaction of the solar winds with the relatively cold space beyond the solar system. IBEX will also accurately map the boundaries of the sun’s solar system.
There’s also astronomy news about a new aurora on Saturn, unique compared to other auroras we’ve known. An aurora results when charged particles stream along the planet’s ‘magnetic fields. Earth’s aurorae come from charged particles from the solar wind. Jupiter’s aurorae come from interactions within Jupiter’s own magnetic field. Saturn’s aurora, which covers a very large area, has been seen in infrared and will teach scientists a lot about this phenomenon.
Universe today is another source of astronomy news. On November 13, 2008 it carried the story of contact reestablished with the Mars rover. The rover had lost contact after running through a massive dust storm. But the rover came through with shining colors even though it lacked power. With the dust blocking sunlight from its solar panels, the fear was that it would shut down completely and never recover. But it recovered and now it’s back on the job.
that the Allen telescope array which is part of the SETI project will find intelligent life in only a little over a decade is staggering astronomy news. With time the array will grow in power provided by 350 radio antennas. Well before 2025 people reached so far into space that it can’t help but find intelligence.
There could be no bigger astronomy news than actual contact with intelligence.
