10 Tips For Getting Rid Of Hemorrhoids After Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids during and after pregnancy are a common occurrence.  They typically occur as a result of the pressure the growing uterus puts on the veins in the lower rectum during pregnancy.

Aloe Vera Gel

If you cannot find an aloe plant locally, aloe gel should be available at your local pharmacy.

 

Non Prescription Pain Relievers

 

Over the counter medications such as Tylenol (Acetaminophen) and Motrin (Ibuprofen) both work well to reduce hemorrhoid pain and swelling.  

Both should be safe to take even if you are nursing but just to be safe if you are nursing ask your doctor first.

 

Warm Baths

 

Warm sitz baths are the most popular at home remedy for treating hemorrhoids after birth and hemorrhoids in general because it’s simple and extremely effective.

Put some warm water in a bath tub or a sitz tub and soak the hemorrhoids in it for around fifteen minutes, two to three times per day.

If you do this consistently, you should notice a significant reduction in the swelling and pain within a couple of day.

 

Ice Packs

 

Applying ice on to the hemorrhoids will reduce the pain on contact.  The coldness of the ice works to soothe the hemorrhoid and bring down the swelling.

To do this, soak gauze pads in witch hazel, place in a plastic bag and put in the refrigerator or freezer until cold then apply directly to hemorrhoid.

 

Avoid Sitting For Long Periods of Time

 

When hemorrhoids are active after childbirth you really should try to avoid sitting for long periods of time. 

Try to rest and lay down as much as possible.  Doing this takes the pressure off of your lower body and rectum, helping them to heal.

 

Do Not Strain When Going To the Bathroom

 

It is important not to strain when having a bowel movement.  The straining will only aggravate the hemorrhoids and make the condition worse.

Another effective way to find hemorrhoid relief from postpartum hemorrhoids is by using over the counter creams or ointments.  Most of them contain ingredients that will reduce the pain, itching and swelling.

These products are designed to give you relief during a hemorrhoid flare-up and are not meant to be used on a long term basis. 

Before using them, you may want to run it past your doctor to make sure it’s the right choice for your condition.

 

Keep The Hemorrhoid Area Clean

 

Making sure the hemorrhoid area is clean at all times is a great way to prevent additional itching and irritation. 

To do this, take several warm baths daily.  Also, use warm water or moist wet wipes to clean yourself up after each bowel movement.
